No wonder Jenny looked young. She was nineteen, two years younger than me. She must have been smart to graduate college before turning twenty. Or maybe she wasnât a Harvard grad. Rubbing my stiff neck, I tried to solve the enigma of Jenny Nicolay. But her mystery wouldnât be solved today. Anxiety twisted in my stomach as I imagined what Turner might uncover. As I packed the boxes, an internal war waged. What if I confronted Jenny? I couldnât. Not until I learned more.
On my way return to town, I noticed a white Ford pickup tailing me. It wasnât the first time I spotted the truck. The same vehicle followed me to Birdie Johnsonâs place.
I laughed to myself. âIâm starting to sound as paranoid as Jenny.â
There werenât many roads to Lake Falls; maybe it was a coincidence he followed me, all day long. I increased the pressure of my foot on the gas. As my Plymouth gained speed, I glanced in my rearview mirror. The white Ford matched my pace. Making a sharp right, I swerved onto one of the back-roads. Iâd been driving on those roads for eight years or more. My experience gave me an advantage over the Ford. I rolled up my window as I twisted onto the narrow dirt road. Named Pine Street, it was the scenic route through a beautiful piece of land. The road traveled alongside the river. In under a mile Iâd reach the point where the river dropped into the lake via a miniature waterfall. The natural landmark signified the town line.
I glanced in my rearview mirror. The Ford clung to my bumper. Any doubt vanished. Why did the Ford tail me? I made an abrupt turn onto East Boulevard and whooshed by the Stanton Farm. I heard a few distant moos as I kicked up dust and cut through an open field to Cedar Drive. The Ford didnât miss a step.
After crossing the railroad tracks I made a U-turn to Pecan Valley. The Ford motorist navigated country roads better than Red Byron looped the NASCAR track. The Ford mimicked each evasive maneuver with precision. Changing tactics, I cut through another side road and bounced onto Center Street. I parked my car at the grocery store and darted inside. I watched as the white Ford rolled into the parking lot. A tall man with dark hair and a face covered in stubble followed me into the store. I hid behind a rack of flour, sugar and other baking supplies. As he marched to the back of the store, I sprinted for my car. The man never saw me leave. Taking a round-about route to Lake Falls, I saw no sign of the white pickup.
âWhat was he after?â I asked aloud. Maybe he worked for the Kingstons. Maybe they didnât like me snooping around their family tree. Or maybe J.W. the Paranoid enlisted someone to follow me.
One thing was clear, I couldnât help Jenny with the missing Kingston case until I took care of this threat.
